The world of television has moved on massively since the days when we only had a handful of channels to choose from. Now we have the option of hundreds of different stations, providing quality general programming or specialising in a particular genre. Advances in technology also mean that today we watch television in a level of detail and quality unthinkable a generation previously.
If you want to take advantage of multi-channel television, there are more or less two main options that you have to choose from. There is cable TV, which has been on the market for many years and continues to be the most popular way for Americans to receive an advanced television service. There is also satellite television which acts as a very tempting rival, millions of households across the country have opted for this over cable and the number is growing every day. But which one will give you the best service, and leave you the most satisfied. They differ in many aspects, and the easiest way in differentiating between the two is through a direct comparison, giving you all the information so you can make the best possible choice.
Channel Choice: If we are going to use this as a yardstick to compare the two technologies, there can only be one winner- satellite TV. Most basic cable packages offer around 60 channels to the viewer; other ‘premium’ channels are not included in this price and must be paid for separately. With satellite on the other hand, even the cheapest packages contain over 150 channels, a figure that can rise to over 300 if you purchase the most advanced deal. Numbers do not lie- with satellite you will receive a range and depth of programming that you simply cannot with cable.
Availability: If you live in a remote or rural area, you may have experienced the frustration and difficulty of trying to get cable installed in your home. Because it requires cables to be physically installed from a transmission centre to your home, there are certain areas that remain out of the reach of cable television. Nowhere is out of the reach of satellite on the other hand- the technology has a 100% coverage rate across the United States of America.
Flexibility: With cable packages, your choices are fairly limited. You have the basic package, and then you can add a few premium channels such as HBO, Showtime and Cinemax if you so wish. With satellite television however, you have almost unlimited options to customise and personalise your viewing experience. Come from a Hispanic background? There is a Spanish language package with channels from all over Latin America. Have young children? You can buy the family pack which has all the best educational programming. Whatever your preferences, there is a package or deal for you available through satellite TV.
